On September 19, 2008, a permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline was submitted to the United States State Department; Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) made the following statement regarding the un-happy anniversary:

“Instead of celebrating a five-year anniversary of a $7 billion private infrastructure project, we are unfortunately highlighting the fact that the President and his Administration have done nothing but thwart any effort to jumpstart the Keystone XL Pipeline. Not only is this project environmentally safe, it would create thousands of jobs, generate new spending in our economy, and unshackle us from our reliance of foreign oil from politically unstable countries.

In order for the Keystone XL Pipeline’s permit to be approved, the State Department requires a finding that the project ‘would serve a national interest’ – To that I say, Mr. President and Secretary Kerry: the Keystone XL Pipeline is in the nation’s interest for jobs, energy security, and safety; Stop tossing the political football around and do what is best for the American people and this great country.”
