Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled against the Defense of Marriage Act. Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) made the following statement:

“As a supporter of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), it is a sad day in America. I am extremely disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision. Not only has this decision greatly diminished the legal strength of traditional marriage but it has weakened the voice of the people.

Justice Scalia wrote in his dissent, ‘It is an assertion of judicial supremacy over the people’s Representatives in Congress and the Executive...The image of the Court would have been unrecognizable to those who wrote and ratified our national charter.’

Unfortunately, this decision is at the expense of children. It is well known that the institution of traditional marriage benefits children in society. It is also going to be at the expense of religious institutions. I believe that this is one more attack on one of the deep abiding institutions of society. The Supreme Court has done a disservice to the American people, giving them another reason to lose faith in the federal government. I will remain committed to fighting this decision, to being a part of this discussion, and seeing that states’ rights are upheld."
