Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled on a key provision in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The decision threw out the enforcement provision that applies to all or parts of 15 states with past history of voter discrimination. Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) made the following statement:

 “Here in Texas we strive to ensure fair and open elections without interference from the federal government. The Supreme Court’s decision took a stand to protect our states’ rights, acknowledging the 48 year-old Voting Rights Act uses obsolete data which is no longer appropriate in today’s society. Now, the Great State of Texas and the 14 other states will no longer be held to a different standard.”
