Rep. Weber Statement President Biden's Address to Congress

WASHINGTON D.C. – Wednesday, April 28, 2021, U.S. Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX-14) issued the following statement in response to President Joe Biden's Joint Address to Congress:

“The American people were led to believe that electing President Biden would mark a return to “normalcy,” and he would take bipartisan action to unify the country.  However, Biden’s first 100 days and his Joint Session address demonstrate that this administration is anything but normal, moderate, or unifying.  Last night, President Biden lied to the people about his failed record, never addressed the border crisis, proposed unprecedented spending, and a historic expansion of government.

"If Biden’s proposals are implemented, this Administration would spend roughly $10 trillion in less than one year since taking office.  To pay for these massive spending increases, the President proposed doubling the capital gains tax rate, raising the top income tax rate from 37% to 39.6%, repealing the 20% pass-through deduction, raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%, and eliminating certain expensing provisions.

"Before the pandemic hit American shores, we had the strongest economy our nation has ever seen.  The effects of these policies will stall the economic recovery that began during the last several months of the Trump administration, discourage the type of economic growth and investment in the backbone of our nation—small business—that we saw in 2018-2019, while further enabling Americans’ dependency on the government. This radical, hyper-partisan, leftward shift in favor of a metastasizing government will only leave our nation worse off, weaker and more divided.  Americans can’t afford it.  To paraphrase Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-SC) excellent response, it’s time for the Democrats to “build bridges to build bridges,” to reach across the aisle and work with Republicans to address these important legislative priorities in a fiscally responsible way.”
