Congressman Weber Signs Onto Visa Waiver for Israel Act

The authors of the Visa Waiver for Israel Act held a press conference on Tuesday to discuss the importance of allowing Israel’s entrance into the Visa Waiver Program.

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) allows nationals from certain countries to enter the United States as temporary visitors for up to 90 days without first obtaining a visa from a U.S. consulate abroad. Currently there are 37 countries in the VWP.

“This is an opportunity to expand our relationships with one of our strongest allies,” said Congressman Randy Weber. “Israel already participates in a Visa Waiver Program with all of Europe so it is crucial that we extend the same opportunity to reinforce our commitment to our allies.”

In 2010, the U.S. International Trade Administration estimated that the 324,000 Israelis that visited the United States spent around $1.4 billion in travel and tourism.

“Unlike planning for a vacation where you have six months, many business ventures cannot afford to wait even half that time. Allowing Israel to enter the VWP means an increase in investment and trade with a country burgeoning in the biotech industry as well as medical and security research. If this legislation does not pass it would be a missed opportunity for the United States to enhance our business, tourism and job creation.”
