The House Foreign Affairs committee announced their assignments for their respective subcommittees.

Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) appointed Congressman Randy Weber (R-TX) to the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations as well as the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

“I’m privileged to have been appointed by Chairman Royce to work on the MENA and Africa Subcommittees,” said Congressman Weber. “Our relationships around the world dictate how we compete on a global level.”

The Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) will have regional jurisdiction over legislation with respect to disaster relief, financial relations, human rights practices, lending institutions, activities of the UN, security pacts, and political relations between the United States and countries in the Middle East -- including Afghanistan and North Africa.

“As a longtime supporter of Israel, I am excited about the opportunity to be more actively involved in the issues impacting the broader region, while forging new bonds to foster a vibrant global economy and safer world.”

In addition to its regional jurisdiction, the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations, has oversight of international health and population issues, the United Nations and its affiliated agencies, international cultural and educational programs and exchanges, the American Red Cross, and the Peace Corps.  Additionally, the Subcommittee will have legislation and oversight of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including legislation aimed at the promotion of human rights and democracy generally, as well as the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, and related issues.

“As a strong advocate on the fight against human slavery, I am excited about the opportunity to continue my work in the abolitionist movement, while working toward strengthening human rights across the globe. I am also excited to learn more about the ever-evolving continent of Africa, as well as the impacts medical advances and technology may provide toward the greater good for our world.”
