Take Action to End Modern Day Slavery

Today we must all take a moment to recognize that there are 30 million slaves in the world today. Additionally, approximately 82 percent of those enslaved in the United States are our own citizens. Unfortunately those numbers will continue to grow unless we take action. In honor of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, I am asking that everyone take a moment and educate themselves about the widespread issue of modern-day slavery.

How you can help:

Take Action. Become an educated and socially-conscious consumer - from what you put on your feet, to what you choose to eat, and what you choose to wear. Visit www.productslavery.org to learn about slave-free products, where they are produced in the world, and where slave-free or free-trade products may be purchased.

Report a tip. If you believe you have information that could help combat human trafficking or save someone’s life contact the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-888-3737-888.

Volunteer. Learn how you can help in your local community at www.polarisproject.org/state-map/.

It is important that Congress, our State governments, and our local communities all work together to fight against human trafficking. I will make it a priority here in Washington to fight for tougher laws that will help protect those most vulnerable, and ensure that those who are freed have the opportunity and resources to start a new life and not fall victim again.

If you have questions or concerns regarding human trafficking or other issues please feel free to contact my office at 202-225-2831.
