League City, TX – On Wednesday, April 30, the judging for the 2014 Congressional Art Competition took place. There were 56 entries submitted this year from high school students throughout the 14th district.  The winner of the 2014 Congressional Art Competition is La Marque High School Senior, Zoe Gibbons.

The schools included this year were Bay Area Christian School, one Homeschool in Brazoria, Santa Fe High School; Brazosport Christian School, Dickinson High School, Brazosport High School, La Marque High School, West Brook High School, High Island High School, Nederland High School, Port Neches-Groves High School.

The judges for this year’s competition were Herb Kreutzer of Kizmet Studios; Lynn Castle, Executive Director at The Art Museum of SE Texas; Greg Busceme, TASI Director, The Art Studio; Summer Lydick, The Painted Wall and art instructor.

“I was inspired by our unique family,” said Zoe Gibbons, 2014 Art Competition winner.  “My older brother and I are viewed by Americans in different ways.  We have attended the same schools, shopped in the same stores and we are treated as two separate people (different & not equal) instead of ONE family. The lines are drawn separating us, without any reason. It was a painful reality that both of us were made aware of as teenagers growing up in America. The Fabric of America is my way of expressing how I feel - America is made up of ALL kinds of people (fabric) and as Americans we should view the HUMAN RACE as ONE.”

Aside from being passionate about art, she is currently a student athletic trainer, participates in the Peer Assistance Leadership Program (PALS) and sits on the Mayor’s Council for the City of Texas City. Upon graduating high school, Zoe will work toward her ultimate goal of obtaining her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

“Our second year of the Congressional Art competition was a great success,” said Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood). “I could not be more proud of all the entrants and our winner Zoe Gibbons. Her passion for art was evident as she explained her inspiration for her competition piece. I hope Zoe has enjoys this time with her family and friends as graduation is rapidly approaching. I wish her all the best in her future endeavors and look forward to seeing her in D.C.”
