Congressman Weber Makes Statement on Texas City Oil Spill

League City, Texas – On Saturday, March 22 an oil barge collided with a ship, resulting in spilling up to 168,000 gallons of oil into the Houston Ship Channel and the Texas City Dike being closed. Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) made the following statement:

“First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers go to the crew members who were injured on the vessel. My office and I are closely monitoring the developments concerning the spill. It is my understanding that only one compartment of the barge was breached. The barge has been refloated and all remaining cargo has been removed.

The quick response of the Galveston County Emergency Team and Coast Guard will lessen the negative impact of this spill. The oil cleanup is underway and the National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting an investigation of the incident. I will remain in contact with the Coast Guard and Galveston County Emergency Team while standing ready to provide assistance as needed.”
