Weber Signs onto Kate's Law

Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) joined onto Representative Matt Salmon’s (R-AZ05) legislation, the Establishing Mandatory Minimums for Illegal Reentry Act. Congressman Weber released the following statement:

“Recently, we learned of Kate Steinle’s tragic and shocking murder by a seven-time convicted felon and illegal alien.  At a time when the current Administration refuses to follow the law, it is imperative that Congress acts to protect our citizens. Kate’s law is a common sense solution to the problem we are facing with the lack of enforcement against those who enter our country illegally and break our laws. Sanctuaries cities are now more emboldened than ever to ignore the law knowing they may seek refuge under the cover of the Executive Branch.”

The Establishing Mandatory Minimums for Illegal Reentry Act (Kate’s Law), would amend current law to mandate a five-year minimum sentence for individuals who return to the United States illegally after deportation. Congressman Weber is also a co-sponsor of Representative Salmon’s the Stop Catch and Release Act (H.R. 2942), better known as Grant’s Law. Salmon’s bill would require DHS to keep criminal illegal aliens in custody and complete removal proceedings of such aliens within 90 days of arrest, instead of releasing them onto America’s streets.
