Weber Celebrates Juneteenth in DC
Washington, DC,
June 16, 2015
Today, Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) met with local artist Ted Ellis from Friendswood at the Senate Russell Rotunda. Mr. Ellis is featuring his art commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Juneteenth. “It was a pleasure meeting Ted Ellis and learning about his passion to educate the community on our mutual heritage. Ted’s artwork not only tells a story about the journey of our great nation but evokes a feeling of empowerment and hope. Though impossible to pick a favorite of these inspiring pieces, I was drawn to the history and emotion of “Free at Last”. The Juneteenth Freedom Project serves as encouragement for younger generations that are working on a global scale for justice and freedom.” Through humble Texas beginnings, June 19, 1865 is recognized as the day on which slavery finally came to an end in the South. Word of General Order Number Three, read by General Gordan Granger at Galveston’s Ashton Villa, spread quickly across the American Southwest. Today, 43 states and the District of Columbia have resolutions observing the importance of June 19th in shaping our nation. Yesterday, Congressman Randy Weber introduced House Resolution 316, in observance of the historical significance of Juneteenth Independence Day. To read it, click here. ### |
