Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Rep. Randy Weber (TX-14) questioned TikTok’s CEO Shou Chew at a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing entitled, “TikTok: How Congress Can Safeguard American Data Privacy and Protect Children from Online Harms.” The hearing addressed and explored TikTok’s consumer privacy and data security practices, how the platform affects children, and its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party. Excerpts and highlights below: “Here are my concerns with TikTok. Your claims are hard to believe. It is no secret that TikTok is still under the thumb of CCP influence. “And let’s be honest: TikTok is indoctrinating our children with divisive, woke, and pro-CCP propaganda, all while threatening our national security with Chinese spyware. “We also know TikTok and ByteDance are obligated under CCP law to “support, assist, and cooperate with state intelligence work” and to do so in secrecy. “This is dangerous. This is a threat, and it is imperative that this committee takes swift action.” |
