Weber votes no on Syria amendment

Today, the United States House of Representatives voted on an amendment to H.J. Res. 124, which would provide assistance, training, equipment, supplies and sustainment for Syrian rebels to defend the people of Syria from the Islamic State and to ultimately secure territory held by the Syrian opposition. Representative Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) made the following statement:

“I cannot in good conscious vote for legislation that is riddled with unknowns. Our history proves that we do not have an exemplary track record in choosing the right side in conflicts, particularly within the Middle East. Before I can make the decision on whether or not we should provide training and weapons to Syrian rebels, I need more answers, specifically on how these rebels are vetted, how long it will take to train them and the contingency plan should this fail. Congress owes it to the American people to ensure we get this right if we are to effectively destroy the barbarians of the Islamic State.”
