Today, House Republicans held a morning conference to discuss the border crisis. Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) shares his reaction to the meeting and hope for a plan to respond to the crisis:
“At the House Republican conference this morning, we discussed a variety of ideas on how to handle the border crisis. It is very important that we put America first and turn the tap off. There are six tenants I would like to see in the plan that will be announced by House leadership next week:
Rescind the President’s executive memorandum, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
Send the National Guard to help secure our border and reimburse states for it.
Change current laws, specifically:
Section 462 of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to prevent the transfer of unaccompanied children to HHS in an effort to expedite their repatriation with their families and native countries.
The William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) of 2008 so the Secretary of State may enter into agreements with any nation to quickly send illegals, including UACs back to their country of origin.
Section 235(b)(1)(B)(v) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to clearly define “credible fear” in an effort to minimize immigration fraud.
Kindly and promptly reunite UACs with their families and home countries by using “last in, first out” method. The funding required to repatriate UACs will be paid for by diverting current foreign aid from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
“I believe that these tenants along with the priorities mentioned in the Texas Republican delegation letter sent yesterday to the President will provide the opportunity to restore order, hold the President accountable for enforcing current law, and send the message that our borders are secure.”
