Letter Urging Progress on the Sabine Pass to Galveston Bay Project

Letter to USACE

When Hurricane Harvey hit Southeast Texas, our communities were devastated. In Orange County alone, more than 27,000 homes flooded, and nine lives were lost. We saw the damage firsthand, and we know exactly what is at stake when the next major storm comes our way.

That is why this week I joined Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn and Congressman Brian Babin (TX-36) in calling on Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Adam Telle to keep the Orange County portion of the Sabine Pass to Galveston Bay Project moving forward.

Congress authorized this project years ago because Orange County needs stronger protection from storm surge and coastal flooding. Billions of dollars have already been committed to the project, Texas has put real skin in the game, and the Army Corps has already done a tremendous amount of work to get us to this point.

Now is not the time to hit the brakes.

With costs changing, there is concern that more studies, reviews, and red tape could delay construction even longer. Orange County has waited long enough. Families, businesses, refineries, and the energy infrastructure that powers America cannot afford to keep waiting while paperwork piles up.

Our message to Secretary Telle was simple. Use the authority you have, put the funding already available to work, and get shovels in the ground.

We made a commitment to the people of Orange County, and I intend to see it through. When Mother Nature comes knocking again, I want Southeast Texas to be ready.

Taking on H-1B Hiring in Public Schools

K-12 H1B

Texas should be leading the nation in putting American workers first, not in the number of H-1B visa holders working in our public schools.

According to the National Education Association, more than 500 public school districts across the country employ over 2,300 H-1B visa holders, and Texas employs more H-1B educators than any other state. Up in Dallas ISD, they currently employ 171 H-1B workers, more than any other school district in Texas.

That is why I was glad to see Governor Greg Abbott announce this week that he wants Texas public schools to have exactly ZERO employees working under the H-1B visa program.

The H-1B program was created to bring in highly specialized workers when Americans are not available to fill those jobs. It was never intended to become a pipeline for taxpayer-funded school districts to look overseas before investing in American workers here at home.

We should be asking why Texas leads the country in this category in the first place.

Our state is home to millions of hardworking Americans, outstanding colleges and universities, veterans looking for their next career, and young Texans deciding what they want to do with their lives. Instead of relying more on foreign labor, we should be investing in American teachers and making sure Texans come first for jobs funded by their own tax dollars.

Governor Abbott has already frozen new H-1B petitions at state agencies and public universities through May 2027. Now he is asking the Texas Legislature to extend that effort to our public schools and ensure the policy applies to both current H-1B employees and future applicants.

I support Governor Abbott’s efforts to put Texans and Americans first, and I will push Congress to do the same. American taxpayers fund our public schools to educate American children, and the jobs inside those schools should reflect that same priority.

America First should mean American workers first, too.

Around the District

It’s not only hot outside, it’s also hot in the kitchen where Team Weber is cooking up some wins for Texas’ 14th Congressional District!

In Galveston, Team Weber was proud to serve those who served us in uniform by helping provide food and support to veterans and their families across Galveston County.

Over in Beaumont, Team Weber visited the Valero Reaction Lab Ribbon Cutting. This new facility will give Lamar’s engineering students valuable hands-on learning opportunities, preparing them to lead the next generation of Southeast Texas industries that power the nation and the world.

In Port Arthur, Team Weber joined the Port of Port Arthur to celebrate the dedication of the Lot 6 Expansion. This investment means more capacity and a stronger economic backbone for Texas’ 14th District. Our ports keep American-made goods moving, supporting good-paying jobs growing across the region. When our ports succeed, Southeast Texas grows. That’s good for Texas and good for America.

From honoring our veterans to equipping the next generation with the tools they need to succeed and investing in the industries that power our great nation, Team Weber is hard at work across Southeast Texas.
