Randy's Wrap-Up "Inflation Reduction Act"  Today, I voted against the Democrats' so-called "Inflation Reduction Act." This isn’t the first time House Democrats have supported radical legislation this Congress: First, House Democrats voted to fuel inflation with trillions of dollars of reckless spending. Then, House Democrats have voted for mass amnesty during an unprecedented open border crisis. Now, House Democrats will soon vote for 87,000 new IRS agents to audit and harass more Americans. And while our country is in the middle of a recession and Americans are paying more for everyday goods, the Democrats have once again tried to spend their way out of the inflation caused by their own reckless spending. Make no mistake: this quote-unquote Inflation Reduction Act will increase taxes on American businesses, adds a new gas tax, hurts our energy companies, calls for the hiring of thousands of additional IRS "agents and auditors" to target all incomes, and invests billions in the Left's radical Green New Deal. I voted against this monstrosity, and the provisions of this bill will cause severe damage to our – already broken – economy and hurt Texas families. "Inflation Reduction Act"

play button

Today, I voted against the Democrats' so-called "Inflation Reduction Act."

This isn’t the first time House Democrats have supported radical legislation this Congress: First, House Democrats voted to fuel inflation with trillions of dollars of reckless spending.

We must rein in out-of-control government spending immediately. Americans depend on it.

I want to take a second to highlight a few provisions in the bill that will harm hard-working Americans.

  • Spends $80 billion to allow the IRS to hire 87,000 new agents to target American families and businesses.
    • This is more staff than the Pentagon, State Department, Border Patrol, and FBI COMBINED.
  • Raises taxes on businesses when Americans are already paying more for just about everything.
    • These tax increases will be passed on to the consumer, stifle reinvestment in infrastructure, R&D, and workers, and only exacerbate the current supply chain crisis.
  • Raises taxes on millions of Americans in every income bracket, including those earning less than $400,000 per year, despite Biden’s numerous pledges during his campaign to the contrary.
    • In fact, Americans making less than $400,000 will bear as much as two-thirds of the tax burden by 2031.
  • Implements socialist price control schemes for prescription drugs that will negatively impact seniors, patients, those with rare diseases, and their families.
    • As a result, prices for new drugs will be more expensive, increasing costs at the pharmacy counter and raising insurance premiums. Additionally, this will lead to less innovation and fewer cures.
  • Extends Obamacare subsidies—enacted under the American Rescue Plan and set to expire after 2022—for 3 more years, through 2025, benefiting the wealthy and subsidizing people who already have insurance.
    • This expands federal spending without enacting any meaningful reform to a broken system.
    • Incites inflationary pressure when inflation is already at a 40- year high.
  • Spends over $350 billion in “Green New Deal” initiatives.
    • This bill creates an American Energy Tax by increasing fees and taxes on oil production and methane. American families will pay these taxes in the form of higher gas prices, larger heating bills, and higher consumer prices.

FBI/DOJ Raid

FBI/DOJ

This week, the FBI raided a former President's home - in America. Biden using the FBI/DOJ to target a political opponent is unprecedented and lawless. Talk about the deep state, overreach, and the radical left.

Let's get this straight the FBI would not investigate Hillary Clinton and her laptop. They lied about a fake document to a FISA court. They will not investigate Hunter Biden. Joe Biden bragged about holding $1 billion quid pro quo over Ukraine's head. No wonder a lot of people think the FBI is becoming the state police. Sad state of affairs.

My GOP colleagues and I stand ready to get our nation back on track with the Commitment to America, and I had a great conversation with President Trump this week. We remain focused on November, and President Trump is fired up. When the Republicans are in charge, we will conduct rigorous oversight of the unelected bureaucracy. This egregious double standard must be stopped, and the swamp must be drained!

The Depletion of our Strategic Petroleum Reserve

SPR

Below is an op-ed I wrote on President Biden's decision to deplete our Strategic Petroleum Reserve:

On President Joe Biden’s first day in office, he fired the first shot in his war against fossil fuel production in the United States by signing an executive order to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline. We are over 500 days into his term, and it has been an all-out assault against American energy.

But one of the most alarming offensives is Biden’s abuse of the U.S.’ invaluable Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). This misguided policy encapsulates President Biden’s recklessness with America’s resources.

The SPR is at its lowest point since 1986 due to President Biden’s profligacy.

Around 60 percent of the crude oil stored in the SPR resides at two sites in Texas’ 14th Congressional District: Bryan Mound in Freeport and Big Hill near Winnie, making this issue extremely close to home. The SPR is an emergency supply of crude oil that has rarely been tapped since its inception, only during times of great need, such as in the aftermath of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.

Its capacity is 714 million barrels of oil, and at the beginning of Biden’s tenure as president, the SPR held 638 million barrels (almost 90 percent full).

By the time Russia invaded Ukraine, a little over a year into Biden’s presidency, that stockpile had dwindled to 580 million barrels (just over 81 percent) and further, to just under 565 million barrels on April 1, 2022.

Notwithstanding this alarming depletion of treasured emergency fuel, on March 31, Biden promised to withdraw 180 million barrels—1 million barrels every day—over six months, purportedly to combat the highway robbery Americans face daily at the gas pump.

If that withdrawal rate remains uninterrupted for all 180 days, the SPR will be left with a mere 384 million barrels, dropping almost 40 percent since the president took office.

The SPR was authorized in 1975 by the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, which empowers the president to draw from its reserves. However, the ability to direct the Secretary of Energy to begin drawing oil is contingent on a “severe energy supply interruption.” It isn’t easy to fathom that this condition has been met since the country with the largest untapped oil reserves is, you guessed it, the USA!

In the simplest of terms, President Biden would be well served to remember the critical aspects of the SPR.

Strategic: Both 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina are examples of disastrous circumstances beyond our control; thus, our response—including a temporary resort to the SPR—was strategic in nature. On the other hand, the current crisis is a matter entirely of Biden’s own making (despite his finger-pointing at Vladimir Putin and others). The president’s wild Hail Mary pass is neither warranted by the facts nor effective in its stated goals.

Petroleum. The Far Left’s fixation against fossil fuels denies the reality that, even under

ideal circumstances, a transition to renewables is not ready for prime time, with the significant infrastructure needed to accommodate the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and the like. Even then, fossil fuels will remain a necessary component of any future energy basket—and we are blessed to have a lot of it in TX-14.

Reserve. Finally, we should tap into this stockpile in the spirit of last resort. This resource, equivalent to a “rainy day fund,” should be used only in case of an economic downpour. While current circumstances are daunting, they are not entirely unmanageable—yet. In the meantime, the SPR should never be squandered in a slapdash manner to cover up bad policies. And certainly not when it will cost much more to replenish those reserves—again, because this president’s outlandish restrictions make domestic oil production much more expensive.

It need not be that hard to implement sound policy. Only if your political fortunes are inextricably tied to the petulant demands of anti-energy know-nothings does it take courage to do the right thing.
