Dear Friend,
It was a pretty big week for news between receiving the first round of rescissions, withdrawing from the Iran Deal, welcoming three Americans home from captivity, and questioning Secretary Rick Perry regarding the Department of Energy budget for fiscal year 2019.
Though the week was full of newsworthy moments, the most notable is this: Tomorrow is Mother's Day. To my wonderful mother, beautiful wife, and all mothers: Thank YOU for the countless sacrifices you selflessly make for your children. Parenting is no easy business, but it is the most rewarding. Where would we be without our moms? Happy Mother's Day to all of you.
Sincerely,

Randy K. Weber

Iran Deal |
On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, President Donald Trump announced the United States is withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, more commonly known as the Iran Deal. I applaud his decision.
The Iran Deal was a bad deal from the beginning. It was a unilateral decision that could never have passed the Senate. The House sure didn't approve of it. An agreement was never going to temper Iran's behavior or Iran’s desire to develop a nuclear weapons arsenal. This "deal" gave them the occasion to further foster unrest throughout the Middle East - Hizbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Syria, the Houthis in Yemen. Iran funds terrorists organizations.
Their aggression extends to its own people. Iranians who disagree with the Ayatollah and his regime are often subjected to imprisonment, torture, and public murder.
There has never been a reason to believe the regime would act in good faith.
After hearing the U.S. withdrew from the JCPOA, members of the Iranian Parliament took to the floor, burning the American flag and chanting "death to America". This is not okay. This is not how rational actors behave.
By withdrawing from the deal and re-imposing sanctions, we have the occasion to once again strategically target and pressure the Iranian regime. Iran will no longer believe it is immune to consequences.

Department of Energy |
As many of you know, I serve as the chairman of the Energy Subcommittee for the Science, Space, and Technology Committee. My subcommittee’s specialty is the Department of Energy. We have jurisdiction over energy research, development, and demonstration projects: This means DOE national labs; scientific activities; fossil energy research and development; clean coal technology; nuclear energy; and more.
This week, Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry came to testify before the Full Science Committee. We had the opportunity to ask him about the DOE budget for fiscal year 2019.
Secretary Rick Perry testified at the SST hearing this week. Click the photo or here to watch me question Secretary Perry.

A Look Ahead |
Next week, we'll have a busy week with voting, committee hearings, and meetings. Looking forward to another great week!
For a look at legislation on the floor, our weekly schedule is posted here.
The next big bill on the floor is Farm Bill (H.R. 2 - Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018), introduced by chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, Michael Conaway, a fellow Texan.
