A message to our Veterans

Vet Day

I am honored to represent many men and women who have sacrificed so much for our nation. When y’all sent me to Washington, I promised that I would fight for our veterans, and I am honored to keep that promise and continue working to ensure you receive the care and services you deserve. You and your families have sacrificed so much in serving our country and defending our freedoms, and I thank you.

I understand the necessity of ensuring that every American who served our great country in our military receives the crucial benefits and services they deserve.  My office remains committed to helping veterans with outstanding claims at the VA, and helping expedite benefits decisions and record requests, bill payments, benefit adjustments, disability percentage increases, and much more.

I have a great team of constituent advocates that are at your service to help you with any issues that you face, from veteran’s health care to VA benefits. Please reach out to YOUR office! I never forget I was elected to serve you. I vow to fight for your needs and to make sure you receive the quality care and service you deserve.

Thank you for your service to our country.

United States Postal Services

Today, Senator Cruz and I sent a letter to senior officials at the United States Postal Service (USPS) about the increase in postal theft in Texas’ Fourteenth Congressional District and demanded answers on the steps they are taking to combat this urgent and ongoing problem.

In recent months, many constituents have contacted our offices with concerns about postal theft and mail that has never reached its destination or was not delivered. This is occurring every day across Southeast Texas, and it is imperative to our constituents and the American public that they can rely on this age-old institution to pay bills and receive medications and other important daily items.

We asked them these nine questions:

  1. What is the status of any USPS investigations regarding postal theft in Southeast Texas?
  2. What methods are being used to investigate the mail theft at the Bob Lyons Post Office?
  3. Has the USPS documented an increase in mail theft complaints in recent years? If so, please share the data you have compiled related to these complaints.
  4. Does the Houston-Galveston region have a higher postal theft rate than other areas across the country? If not, how does it rank?
  5. How many complaints of check washing or mail theft has the Postal Inspection Service or Office of the Inspector General received related to the Galveston Post Office?
  6. Is the USPS partnering with local and/or federal law enforcement to investigate these crimes? If so, what actions are they taking to combat this issue?
  7. What operational changes has USPS made or is planning to make at the Galveston Post Office location or other area facilities to address check washing or mail theft?
  8. What steps can people take to better protect themselves from postal theft?
  9. Where can people go to report issues of postal theft?

Earlier this week, I met with the Port Arthur’s Vietnamese-American community to listen to their concerns with the shrimping industry. U.S. fishermen have faced rising fuel costs, a growing volume of cheap and low-quality imports, and a surplus supply in cold storage. I will continue to combat foreign seafood dumping and support Gulf Coast fishermen. Additionally, I was able to attend the ribbon cutting for the Royal Caribbean International Terminal in Galveston. This is truly a state-of-the-art facility. The best news for our community is that the terminal will generate $1.4 billion in local business services and $5.6 million dollars in state and local tax revenue. The new terminal is expected to double the number of cruises and passengers using Galveston cruise terminals each year, and it will add 800 jobs right here in Galveston County.

On Wednesday, I had the privilege to present my friend, Petty Officer 2nd-Class Dale Henry, the Good Conduct Medal for his service in the United States Navy. We are proud to present him the military honor he rightfully earned. As a community and a nation, we are forever indebted to our veterans service and the sacrifices they have made for our country.
