Southern Border

border

Illegal crossings along the U.S. southern border jumped more than 30% in July, according to preliminary U.S. Customs and Border Protection data obtained by The Washington Post.

It is no secret that the State of Texas is bearing the brunt of a national crisis at our southern border directly resulting from the unlawful and irresponsible actions of President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas.

Criminal cartels maintain operational control of the border. Migrants are dying on Texas ranches and along the Rio Grande. Little children are enslaved in the sex-trafficking trade – the tragic story for hundreds of thousands brought to light in the “The Sound of Freedom.” Fences are being cut, livestock are escaping, ranchers are threatened, and high-speed chases are tearing through small towns. Perhaps most deadly, dangerous fentanyl is pouring into our communities via an open border – empowering China and cartels while killing 200 Americans per day.

As a consequence, Governor Abbott has been forced to use Texas’ limited resources to do at least part of the job the federal government refuses – and the Texas Legislature has had to appropriate nearly $10 billion through Operation Lonestar and related efforts. Rather than reimburse Texas for its efforts, which benefit all Americans, the Biden administration has filed suit against our state citing “humanitarian concerns,” purposefully ignoring the humanitarian crisis of its own making.

House Republicans have taken action to force the question in passing H.R. 2 – the strongest border security bill to ever pass Congress – and hold Secretary Mayorkas and other Biden officials accountable in committee hearings. However, this amounts to nothing more than political theater if Congress is unwilling to use the strongest tool granted to us by the founders – the power of the purse – to force the change necessary to protect Texas and secure the border.

I joined 14 of my Texas colleagues in urging the rest of my House colleagues to use the power of the purse to force President Biden to end the carnage resulting from open borders. No appropriation should fund DHS until the necessary steps are taken to secure the border, such as:

  1. signing H.R. 2, or similar strong border security legislation, into law and prohibiting funds from being used in contravention of its provisions, including by mass releasing migrants through the CBP One app or otherwise;
  2.  adopting policies that give law enforcement and/or our military the tools necessary to target dangerous cartels;
  3. ensuring Secretary Mayorkas is removed from office, resigns, is fired, or is otherwise defunded; and/or
  4. reimbursing Texas the $10 billion – to date – for Operation Lonestar and related border security efforts, as well as any other border state that has demonstrated such significant law-enforcement related expenses, and stopping Biden’s lawsuit against our state.

Simply put, no member of Congress should agree to fund a federal agency (DHS) at war with his state and people. We have a moral obligation to protect our states, our nation, and, importantly, the migrant children getting abused from the disaster transpiring at our southern border.

This Week's Poll Question

This week, President Biden announced he would request a $40 billion supplemental appropriations request, including $24 billion for Ukraine. We have already sent billions to Ukraine without oversight on how those dollars are spent.

I believe this request exacerbates the Biden Administration’s out-of-control deficit spending. Americans are tired of funding endless wars and want policies that not only help restore fiscal sanity in Washington, but also put America and American citizens first.

Do you think we should send $24 billion to Ukraine?

Around the District

do

I started the week off in Washington to attend the celebration for the Houston Astros 2022 World Series Championship at the White House. Then I had an interview with Spectrum News to discuss what's going on along the Texas-Mexico border and the efforts Gov. Abbott has taken to secure our great state. At home in the district, I had the chance to sit down with American Jewish Committee Board members in the Galveston area to discuss what is going on in Israel and the Middle East. Then I sat down with Thomas Duncavage with the Office of the Governor on the Texas Military Preparedness Commission. The Commission's goal is to preserve, protect, expand, and attract new military missions, assets, and installations. Thank you for your service and what you are doing for Texas!

I also met with the Houston Association of Realtors. We discussed the impacts of higher interest rates on our economy and homebuyers and the supply chain issues they face building houses. I ended the week off in Orange County. I was able to tour the Port of Orange and hear about the work they are doing!

Team Weber attended the Wounded Warrior Congressional Roundtable, Business Alliance meeting, Port Arthur Contractors meeting, and attended the Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting for Coastal Health & Wellness, a community health clinic under the Galveston County Health District, and Gulf Coast Center.

Military Academy Nominations

Military Academy Nominations

For over 100 years our great service academies have produced some of America’s greatest leaders.  Not only are these programs producing military leaders, they are also molding better citizens for America. They prepare our youth to be well-rounded leaders and agile thinkers who will take their lessons of discipline and leadership with them into both military and civilian careers.

Part of my privileges as a Member of Congress is that I am authorized to nominate candidates for appointment to the U.S. Service Academies.  Every year I look forward to reading those applications.  I am always impressed by the character, selflessness, and -- above all -- the devotion to the ideals of our great nation.

The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

Each member of Congress may nominate up to ten individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to our district for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Below you will find all the information  to start the process, including checklists and important dates. This year's deadline is Friday, October 20, 2023. I would also encourage you to watch the videos linked here and here (part II) called “The Five-Pointed Star.” It’s a great overview of what each of the US Service Academies have to offer.
